Our society has created a stereotype called the “Teenager”. Most stereotypes in our society are frowned upon because of the negative connotations that are associated with them. However, this designation for people between the ages of 13-18, give or take a few years, is perpetuated in media, conversation, and sadly even in expectation. ”Teenager” has become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Most people involved in the life of a “Teenager” dislike or even hate the actions, behaviors, and attitudes associated with this stereotype. The most interesting thing is that these disagreeable actions, behaviors, and attitudes are driven by the misunderstandings and assumptions that are placed on the “Teenager”.
I have conversations with teenagers regularly. They do have struggles that are unique to their present life situation. I also listen to what is being said about teenagers by those who are in their lives as well as by those who have little to no interaction with them. I see the disconnect.
Teenagers are not a stereotype. They are people who need honest, wise guidance and Godly instruction for life. As long as we treat them like a stereotype they will probably continue to try to live up to that stereotype….Just a thought.

I guess putting people into stereotypes is just part of being human. We have to choose to move beyond these things and treat people as individuals. Whether child, or teenager, adult, or senior, we are all human and cut from the same mold. If we choose to associate with each other as individiuals created by the same GOD, I think there is much to be learned from one another.
